In the 5th century Germanic peoples, the Vandals, Sueves, Alans, and Burgundians invaded the western par of the Roman Empire. The Alemanni of southern Germany took advantage of this to take over Switzerland and northeastern France. The Frank expanded into northern and central Gaul. The Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to Britain in waves.

The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist until its capital, Constantinople, was conquered by the ottoman Turks In 1453.
