The original name Iran (= Aryan) was overlaid in the west by the Greek name Persia. This persisted until modern times. In 1935 the Shah (king) tried to reinstate Iran as the name, but this was not successful and in 1949 either name use was accepted. In recent years international use has accepted Iran, however the word Persian is used in some contexts.
Of course, pain exists regardless of culture. Iranians in particular are a very openly emotional people and there is an incredible wealth of Iranian music and poetry that expresses the pain both emotional and physical that Iranians may feel.
The Athenians accepted Spartan leadership, even after Athens was destroyed. Their armies fought effectively together against Xerxes eventually driving the Persians out of Greece. The Spartans were prepared to fight Persia in the Greek mainland despite knowing it would be easier to simply defend the Isthmus of Corinth.
Persia no longer exists, it is now called the Islamic Republic of Iran and has been such since 1935. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the current President although elections are due this year and the Supreme Leader (who is the Absolute Ruler and not elected) is currently Ali Hoseyni Khamenei.
Not many do but the people that do are the ones that can afford it. They live there to escape the poverty that exists in most rural cities throughout Iran.
