The Texans thought the Mexicans would welcome their presence and accept the claim that Texas owned all the land up to the Rio Grande. The Mexican Army had years of experience patrolling the Commancheria and the Texans were in fact unsure of where and how far Santa Fe even was from their westernmost outposts. They were lost and easy prey the Mexican patrol. The Mexiican Army simply marched them 2000 miles to Mexico City as their prisoners and waited for the United States to negotiate their release. The Texas Republic had poorly planned the whole incursion.
