The Battle of Sicily, fought between July and August 1943 during World War II, occurred as part of the Allied strategy to invade Europe through the "soft underbelly." The Allies aimed to capture Sicily to secure a strategic foothold in the Mediterranean, disrupt Axis supply lines, and pave the way for the invasion of Italy. The battle was also intended to draw German forces away from the Eastern Front and relieve pressure on Soviet troops. Ultimately, the successful capture of Sicily marked a significant turning point in the war, leading to the downfall of Mussolini's regime.
