The early explorers came to the Caribbean by accident. Columbus thought the Caribbean was actually the East Indies but found evidence of abundant Natural Resources. His expedition found gold, silver and copper which was valuable and make his exploration worthwhile. Spain named the Caribbean the West Indies and continued to explore. Spain brought settlers to set up forts and towns to stockpile the goods they were exporting to the old world. Other nations follow suit and settled much of the Caribbean as they claimed territory. Individuals might've come to farm or operate necessary trades such as building, repair, blacksmithing, schooling and medical care but they were encouraged and transported by the nation/government that sailed the boat. Those nations only cared to export goods and materials back to the old world in Europe.
