not many welsh people hate English people but in the past, the English have taken advantage of the welsh. they flooded a welsh village recently to provide water for Liverpool. the name of this villag was cwm trywereyn or something similar. also, they forced wales to have English road signs only and for a long time, welsh people weren't allowed to speak welsh under the reign of Henry the 8th i think. someone important anyway.

These are political things though. The question is about the English people:

The truth is there is competition (sport especially), some resentment (both ways), temperament (we can sometimes be a bit different - Celtic vs AngloSaxon), history (centuries of it), and humour involved in all this. Both the Welsh and English historically tend to support being British, and we've been inter-breeding for centuries!

After Thatcher destroyed the mining she put nothing at all in its place, but again that is political. But poverty can lead to some resentment I suppose.

____

I guess I can only speak for myself and what i know of my friends and family's views on it (all welsh)

we don't neccasserly hate THE ENGLISH , we just hate being ruled by the English. Of course we are happily friends with people from englad and so on , but the horrible crutley the welsh and wales saw from the English lives with us and we will always hold a grudge , until we get independance and no longer seen as 'some place in England'

and i know we probably seem petty fighting for independance because to you thers no problem being ruled by England.... but to us , being ruled by England is as fustrating and unfair as it would be for us to be ruled by Germany or Italy or France. we don't live there , we are nothing to do with you.

You (whoever you are) are misinforming people on 2 counts: A very small minority in Wales 'fight for independence' (only 12% polled would accept it, let alone fight for it), and Wales is not being "ruled by the English". Wales is British - ie part of the United Kingdom - as is England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (although they can choose to hold Irish passports if they want). Wales has a successful National Assembly, as do the Scottish and the Northern Irish. Parliament in London is full of Welsh and Scottish, and always was. The area around London will probably always be more prosperous, due to the inherent welath of being close to a major world city. I would agree that many parts of Wales, middle and northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland have been underfunded. We havent always spread the wealth, or replaced industry (on a local level) that has been disbanded. It has been a problem across the whole of the UK - not just Wales.

In 1998 Wales only just voted for the National Assembly, because many of us Welsh people simply value being part of the UK, and bacause many of us were afraid of the consequences for Wales in breaking up the UK. In the late 70's we resoundingly voted against an independent Wales too - and it was a vote against us being independent of the United Kingdom of course - not from a wealthier 'England' as you suggest! The popular idea with the British was always to try and spread the wealth around the UK - that is generally what people want to see, via subsidy or ideally industry.

Wales overwhelmingly recognises that we are British, and even today only around 12% would accept full devolution.

Wales is a practical and clever country - it doesn't allow its undeniable emotions to outweigh its sense. Believing in independence is fine if you want it so bad, but it simply must be recognised that intelligent people can be both Welsh ANDBritish. It is not a case of 'either / or'. Nationalists should ask themselves this: Would you love one child over another? Careful you don't suggest another Welshman is less Welsh than you, for being British too.

because they think their well better than us :L!
