Cyprus wants to be part of Greece because Greeks make up the majority of the population on the island. Cyprus use to be 100% Greek before the ottomans invaded in the 1500s. In 1974 before the Turkish invasion Greeks made up 82% of the population, while today they make up around 78% of the population. Cyprus wants to unite with their motherland which they have desired since Greece became an independent country, just as many other Greek speaking islands have in the past. Unfortunently because the Americans are benefiting by having a military presence on the island due to its strategic location, this has been difficult to achieve for Greeks as the US had orchestrated a plan to divide Cyprus since the 1950s by having the Greek community and the largest minority, the Turkish cypriots, have a hatred for each other. The island has been ethnically divided since 1974 when Turkey illegally invading occupying 37% of the northern half of the island of which 90% belongs to Greek Cypriots.
