Why should Puerto Rico be independent?

There is many reasons. One of them is because Puertorican feel Americanized and they like US. We like US and you can see that the second largest group of Latinos after Mexican are the Puertorican. For other side, we has made biggest contribution to US and it not would be fair from the US to let Puerto Rico alone. And there is some people that want the independece for Puerto Rico, but that are a small minority. Maybe in the 1940's independence has a lot of followers, but nowaday that is not true. Puerto Rico should be the next state of the USA.

Youre wrong I believe that Puerto Rico should be an independent country because of many reasons.1 Puerto Rico is not Americanized it has its own identity but there are some stupid people who don't appreciate being puertorrican and want to be American 2. Puerto Ricos identity in culture,sports and music surpasses any territory or colony 3. The most industrialize territory in the world 4.No nationality are better than others if the Americans could bring progress to their country Puertorricans can also

I believe that the people destroying our identity are the politicians that are corrupt and don't care about our island the only thing they do is humilliate our island to the U.S

Call it Imperialism. The US deemed it necessary to invade Puerto Rico & Cuba to ensure expansion and security of the United states foreign market in land rich of sugar, coffee, tobacco, and minerals.

Puerto ricans can survive as an independent nation removing all influence of American life style is the only way. Drugs, greed, crime and the thought of easy money must be removed from the population. Trade with south American nations is a start later expansion into Europe and far east.

Puerto Rico seeked independence from Spain because they were left "adrift" as a colony. Puerto Rico was just being used by Spain to generate wealth for themselves, and did not respond to the citizens' requests.

This caused the creation of many political parties within the island, each with a different view of where Puerto Rico should head to. Some prefered independence from Spain, some prefered to incoporate even more into Spain as a province, and some even wanted to switch to join the US.

There were many different points of view on what to do with the island, because these were also different due to the social rankings within the island. For example, as a spanish merchant, you wouldn't want to lose control over your commerce in the island due to it switching to the US or becoming independent, it did just not work for them.

During the Hispanic-Cuban-American War, Spain had to give up Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the US as a war prize. Cuba was guaranteed independence but Philippines and Puerto Rico ended up as colonies.
