US citizens can travel to Canada, Mexico and most of the Caribbean islands by ship or by land until Summer 2008 (the exact date has not been released) without a passport.

US citizens are also able to travel to any of the US territories and Commonwealth (Guam, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, etc) without a passport as long as the flights do not land in any foreign country. As of May 19, 2008: A US citizen can travel by land to Canada or Mexico, or take a round-trip cruise to the Caribbean or British Columbia, without a passport. This is changing, and by spring 2009 even US citizens will probably require a passport to re-enter the USA.
