If you want to avoid traffic as much as possible while not increasing your driving distance significantly, I would do the following:
I-66 West out of Washington
I-81 South
I-77 South
I-40 West
US-321 South near Hickory, NC (all freeway)
I-85 South to Atlanta
--This is an all freeway route and it generally avoids most busy areas along the way, but it is only about 20 miles longer than the most direct (I-95 to I-85) route, and you will more than likely make up for that distance in terms of time. You will also see better scenery, especially on I-66, I-81, and I-77, compared to the I-95/20 route which is rather boring.
I-20 East to I-95 North to US-64 East
Route-66 is the best driving route from Los Angeles to Ontario Canada
