You may need a passport to fly from England to Scotland too - even if your airline doesn't require one, Strathclyde police often stop people.

You do NOT need a passport simply to travel from Scotland to England or vice-versa. However if you fly from say, Bristol to Glasgow, the airport desk staff will want ID and the passport is the document they tend to favour. This is purely for air-travel security, NOT for crossing the border.

If the Scots nationalists get their way to turn Scotland into "an independent country within the EU" (!) then in theory at least you still will not need a passport as it would be between two EU states. The border crossing may then be rather like those between France and Spain (both EU) or non-EU Norway and EU-member Sweden.

You do not need your passport if you have a domestic flights. This means travelling to within your own country by plane, land or sea. There are also countries that allow some others to land and sea travel without their passports given that they have Enhanced Licences or frequent traveler's ID depending on their rules and regulations.
