President James K. Polk offered $25 million to Mexico for New Mexico and Texas during negotiations in the 1840s. However, the Mexican government refused the offer, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. This refusal contributed to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War in 1846. Ultimately, the U.S. acquired these territories through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, but not through the initial purchase offer.

How did James K. Polk feel about taking land from Mexico?

He did not object to acquiring land from Mexico. Much of it had been ceded to the US by Spain in the Adams-Otis treaty or else belonged to the Texas Republic. The rest were considered to be fair spoils of a war which Mexico was happy to engage in , if they did not start it.

What were some actions that James Knox Polk did when he was president?

Polk pretty much acted as his own secretary of state and negotiated a peaceful settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute. He took an active role on dealing with Mexico which eventually led to his asking for a declaration of war. He managed the Mexico War to a successful conclusion (from the US point of view) and acquired much of the US Southwest from Mexico, as well as settling any questions about Texas and California. He said something to the effect that he had accomplished all he intended to do and did not run for re-election.

How was Texas stolen from Mexico before it was a state?

President Polk accused Mexico of killing Americans on American soil (Alamo) but actually all that was claimed by Mexico and under Mexican rule at the time. Either way Mexico was under it's own termoil and was divided and ol' Polk knew it. The time was right and he pretty much antagonized Mexico into a war they could not win. The mexicans were getting pounded after a while and called in their former (ousted) president general Santa Anna. Santa Anna had to trick Polk to get into Mexico for he was exiled in Cuba and had to go through American lines to get back in to Mexico. Long story short we stole it when Mexico had their pants down. They weren't stable enough to defend. Santa Anna was once again made out to be a failure even though he fought for a country that ousted him and it was decided we would give Mexico 15,000,000 dollars and we would get California and surrounding areas and Mexico would recognize the rio grande as the Texas border. Oh by the way that border was a major part of the war. Mexico was really going to leave us alone as long as we didn't push the Texas border to rio grande river. Of course we didn't care and that is how we stole Texas and California. I'm in class right now actually. Lol. You should look it up history is very interesting.

Why did Mexico take the annexation of Texas an as act of war?

Mexico considered Texas as part of its own territory. All the history between the Republic of Texas and Mexico was fraught with disagreements and conflict. Having Texas as part of the US, however was too much to bear for Mexico. The situation soon became a war between the USA and Mexico.
