John F. Kennedy's accomplishments

Everyone seems to think about the Cuban Missiles disaster or the Civil Rights Campaign when they are asked about President Kennedy's achievements but there was also the fact that he won a Pulitzer Book award and the fact that at war he was a hero for risking his own life to swim army soldiers after the ship he was on sinking. That's the only information i can put right now but just go on Google and type in John F Kennedy's achievements and you will get more answers. So basically, he almost destroyed the world (but didn't quite manage it), he accepted a Pulitzer Prize for a book that was written by someone else and he did everything in his power to ignore the Civil Rights Movement. He also committed the USA to Vietnam. What a feeling hero.

•Some accomplishments JFK were, he joined the Navy. While in World War II, Kennedy lead a torpedo boat in the Pacific when the boat was crushed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in August, 1943. Even though JFK was seriously injured, he helped rescue the rest of the crew by helping them swim to safety.

-PT-109 incident: After a PT boat patrolled by Kennedy was rammed by a Japanese destroyer, Kennedy and his crew were stranded in the ocean. JFK gathered up the men and, despite badly injuring his back in the incident, towed a badly burned crewman over 3 miles through the water with a life-jacket strap between his teeth as he led his crew through the water to a nearby island. He then swam from shore to shore to find help and resources. JFK returned home a war hero and got several medals.

As a U.S. Senator:

-Published his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Profiles in Courage in 1955. Questions arose about the authorship of the book as Kennedy was listed as the sole author. JFK privately admitted that although the idea of the book was his, most of the research and writing was written by his speechwriter Ted Sorenson; he gave Sorenson most of the profits generated from the book.

As a President:

-Became the first and, to date, only Catholic president and the youngest president elected to office at age 43.

-Established the Peace Corps in 1961.

-"Saved the world" in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, although he can be blamed in part for escalating the crisis to the point that it did.

-Signed the Nuclear Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963 which prevented the testing of nuclear weapons anywhere but underground. The treaty was signed by the United States, the Soviet Union, and England.

-Called for a bill prohibiting segregation in the U.S.; this would become the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

-Established the National Commission on the Status of Women

-Gave many celebrated speeches, including his Inaugural Address, "Ich Bin Ein Berliner", and "A Strategy for Peace" (American University Commencement Address).
