Ulysses S Grant's ancestors came from England before the Revolutionary War and settled in the area around Worcester Massachusetts where they lived for several generations before moving west to the newly formed state of Ohio in the early national period (early 1800's). Grant spent his boyhood in Ohio before being accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point New York in the 1840's. Grant was proud of his English heritage and devotes several pages at the beginning of his memoirs to his ancestry.
