Between 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson founded West Point, demerits were a common problem for many West Point Students. From 1802 until 1829, only Robert E. Lee never received a demerit. Demerits were handed out at West Point by the administrators for any number of offenses. These ranged from not cleaning their rifles to being late for chapel on Sundays.
