After leaving the Presidency in 1797, George Washington retired to Mount Vernon, his plantation in Virginia, and tried to resume the life of a farmer and plantation owner.
His advice was often sought by the political leaders of the US. From 1798 until his death in 1799, he held a commission as Lieutenant General and Commander-in-chief of the US armies that were being planned for any prospective conflicts. When he died on December 14, 1799, he was still the senior officer of the US Army.
