The idea that slavery should not be ended all at once, but phased-out over time, was sensible enough.

It was the moralising about it that lacked credibility. Even Robert E. Lee, the epitome of the responsible Southern aristocrat, declared that slavery was an undoubted evil that the Almighty would bring to an end when He saw fit.

It is hard to believe that Lee actually thought this.
