Relatively mild. West of the big Cascade Range of mountains around the Puget Sound, even winters are pretty mild. Summers are not really hot, either.

The reason is that the nearby Pacific Ocean provides most of the weather. The weather temperatures are mellowed out by the ocean water. So in Seattle, and other cities around Puget Sound, the weather is rainy, so much so, that the Olympic Forest nearly qualifies as a rain forest.

But . . . when this weather blows across the tall mountains headed east, the moisture is sucked out in the form of rain, leaving the central part of Washington mostly a desert flatland area. It is irrigated, so there are a lot of crops grown there.

In eastern Washington state, the weather turns a little more rainy, and un-irrigated crops like wheat, barley, oats, peas, lentils, and chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and canola oil thrive. In fact, near the Idaho State line is the lentil capital of the world, and just into Idaho is the dry pea capital of the world.
