President Washington had great respect for Thomas Jefferson as an intellectual and turned to him and Alexander Hamilton for advise more often than he did John Adams. He was deeply hurt how Jefferson turned on him during his second administration and their friendship suffered for the remainder of his life though they did heal some of the wounds suffered during his retirement.
