He served in the Navy during WW2 and had his PT boat sunk by the Japanese. He saved the lives of his crew and carried one on his back to safety. As a result he had a bad back problem and often wore a brace. When he returned home from the war he married Jackie and ran for the House of Representatives as a member from Boston. He and Richard Nixon came to the House at the same time so they became fast friends. JFK always knew he would run for President since his older brother lost his life in the war. In the early 1960's it was a big deal to have an Irish Catholic man run for president. There was a great deal of discussion concerning the fact he was Catholic. Many people argued that the Pope would tell him what to do and this was something he had to overcome to get the office of the president. While president he and Jackie had a child, Patrick, who died soon after he was born. Also while president he was not well physically but he hides this from the public. He took steroids and if you look at pictures of him you can see how puffy his face looks. Yet, reports cite that when he walked into a room of people he had such charisma the whole room would respond, but if he felt that if anyone went against him he was done with them.
