The AK-47 first saw limited action during the anti-soviet revolution in Hungary, from 23rd of October, until the 4th of November 1956. The Hungarian revolutionaries have collected limited quantities of this weapon from local military forces, and from the fallen soviet soldiers but due to ammunition shortages it never became a widespread weapon. The revolutionaries mainly used the Hungarian copy of the PPSh-41 submachine gun during the conflict.

The first well known war in which the AK-47 assault rifle was used, was during the Vietnam War (1961-1975); the communists had been using the SKS carbine (rifle) before being phased out by the AK-47.
