Harry S. Truman's first political position--an appointed position, not an elected one--was that of a road overseer in Jackson County, Missouri, a job that he took over from his father. His first seriously entered politics in 1922, when, recruited by representatives of the Pendergast political machine, he ran for and was elected as Eastern Judge of the Jackson County Court, an administrative body that today is known in Missouri as the County Commission.
