1st lieutenant Michael Joseph blassie
The Tomb of Unknowns was established on Memorial Day 1921, an unidentified body from World War I was buried there at that time.Later unidentified bodies from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietman war were added. The Vietnam war body had to be removed later when the body was identified.
Unknowm.
In every war from WWI to Vietnam, one unknown was selected to be interned next to the tomb at Arlington (the WWI unknown is buried under the main tomb structure, and WWII, Korea, and formerly a Vietnam unknown under flat grave markers in front of the tomb). The Vietnam unknown remains were eventually identified and reinterred, and there have be no unknowns since Vietnam due to DNA testing and other modern ID methods.
DNA proved that they were the remains of Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie.
If a veteran chooses to be buried in a veterans cemetery, her or his spouse may be buried next to that veteran, with tombstone engraving and perpetual care provided, all at no cost to the family. Note, however, that the burial of a veteran's spouse MUST be next to the veteran. If a veteran chooses not to be buried in a veterans cemetery (the choice my father made, for example), then the spouse (in this case, my mother, who was never in the military) can not seek burial in a veterans cemetery, and certainly not for free.
Originally four (4). One each for WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, laid to rest in the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington, VA near Washington, DC. In 1998, the remains of the Vietnam War unknown was identified (through DNA), as USAF LT Michael Blassie, shot down near An Loc in 1972. He was reinterred in a family plot; the crypt of the Vietnam Unknown remains empty to this day. So now there are only three (3).
There are only three soldiers buried in the Tomb of the Unknown. One each from WWI, WWII and Korea. The unknown from Vietnam was removed when DNA identified him.

Yes, the spouse of a Vietnam veteran can be buried in Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband. Eligibility for burial includes spouses of service members who have been honorably discharged, which applies to Vietnam veterans. The couple must meet specific requirements, and the burial can be arranged through the appropriate military channels.
