The first President of the United States, George Washington, was voted to be president by every single citizen for both terms he served. After his two terms, he refused to serve a third term of presidency.

The second president, John Adams, decided to follow in his footsteps and serve for only two terms, refusing the third.

All presidents who came after either were not voted to go onto their second terms, or dropped out of the running when it came time to vote for the next president after they'd finished with their second term.

It became an unspoken law to follow the example of our first president, and so today it is known that each president may only serve for the maximum of two terms.
