Of course. Up until we declared Independence, the founding fathers wanted nothing more than get what they deserved, and then return to the Mother country. But King George III was going mentally insane (hence his causing the war), and by the time the British were willing to give us what we had originally asked for around 1775, it was 1778 or so, we had already declared independence and had spilled too much blood to go back. There were still some minor pro-return voices but no, Franklin told the British it was definitely too late, that deal was not on the table, America had made up its mind.

About 1/3 of Americans at the time wanted the American Revolutionary War to occur. These people were called Patriots. Another 1/3 were Loyalists. These were people who wanted to stay loyal to Britain. The last third of American people weren't sure whose side they were on.
