ANSWER:
There were no colonies when the Mayflower sailed, for the New world.
The Mayflower left England on August 15, 1620, with another ship, the Speedwell. After turning back twice because of leaks on the Speedwell, the Mayflower sailed alone with 102 passengers. Of course, they would have their share of good days and bad when it came to the weather.
Also, it got to the point where food and water was getting low, and some would get sick, and there were some on the trip who would die, in search of a better way of life.
The ship reached Cape Cod on November 21, 1620, off of Provincetown Harbor. It reached the present site of Plymouth, Massachusetts, on December 26, 1620.
It took 65 days to reach Cape Cod. They were way off course-they were given land by the British government down by the Hudson River. Being tired, sick, and weatherbeaten, they decided ("they" being Weston and Master Jones) to land in Provincetown Harbor.
There was plenty of trouble getting the voyage started. The Seaflower (an extra ship the pilgrims wanted to bring) was purposely built to be broken and never left the harbor, an influentially leader was sent to jail, and because of countless delays (some of the delays were purposeful sabotage) the food was running low. Without time to restock and fall drawing near, many of the pilgrims gave up. More than half left the Mayflower even though many had lost nearly everything just to get on board.
The voyage was bittersweet. The pilgrims were starved. The sailors were not in the least bit respectful, and the 'tween decks where the pilgrims stayed was far from comfortable. Being only five feet high and filled with people and their belongings, tween deck was a horrible place to live. Seasickness was prominent, and many other sicknesses impacted the pilgrims. Imagine having everything--bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom all in one tight space.
Even when they reached shore there were worries. Would Native Americans attack them? Would they be able to survive the winter? And knowing they were completely secluded-the next British settlement was hundereds of miles away.
The "Mayflower" sailed alone on September 6, 1620 , headed for Virginia. It carried 102 passengers with a crew of 20-30 men and was under the command of Captain Christopher Jones.Christopher Jones was about 50 years old at the time of the "Mayflower's" voyage to America in 1620.
