The American Civil War was a clash between two regions that acted like two separate countries. The men in the ranks were not especially interested in the ideological (slavery) question. The Union troops wanted the cotton revenues back. The Confederates mostly just wanted to repel the invader, and maybe enjoy a darn good fight while they were at it.

The Spanish Civil War was part of a Europe-wide clash of ideologies - Communist v Fascist - with other countries backing the two sides.
