Most people today believe that Lincoln and his supporters were trying to abolish slavery by fighting a civil war. But if you go back to the real history, documents and letters, you will find out that they were keeping the southern states from seceding from the Union.
This is a very debatable topic, seceding from the Union, Many say that is the southern states had left, England would have taken over North America. But if you review the US Constitution you will remember that it is the right of every state to seceding from the Union with out conflict. But because of Lincoln and his supporters, only Texas has that right today; well, as of right now.
A great book to read is "A Century of war: Lincoln, Wilson & Roosevelt" by Denson

5 days after the US Civil War ended, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Lincoln's main goal in fighting the Civil War was to preserve the Union. He believed that the secession of Southern states threatened the very foundation of democracy and the United States as a unified nation. While the issue of slavery was significant, Lincoln initially framed the conflict primarily as a struggle to maintain national unity. Over time, the abolition of slavery became a crucial objective, particularly with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
Abraham Lincoln and his supporters hoped to end slavery and unite the country back together.

During the US Civil War, President Lincoln suspended many freedoms that were guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Habeas Corpus as example was suspended. Suspected supporters of the Confederacy were denied due process. Lincoln's defence of this was that in an emergency, certain civil rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights had to be suspended in the interest of preserving the Union.
The senate could not do much to avoid the 12 civil wars in the Late Roman Republic. It could not stop strong military commanders who had the loyalty of their troops from fighting each other. Moreover, in the first few of these wars, it sided with one of the fighting factions, that of the conservative commander. In one of them, the senate was actually one of the fighting forces. This was Caesar's civil war against the forces of the senate. The Liberators' Civil War was fought between supporters of the senate and supporters of the assassinated Julius Caesar.
