Nearly 800 people are thought to have died at the Battle of Monmouth. About 500 British may have died and about 300 Americans. The outcome of the battle was inconclusive.
The British believed Loyalists were most prominent in the south and sought to enlist the aid of both southerners as well as their slaves. They achieved huge wins in Georgia (late 1778) and South Carolina (May, 1779). Unfortunately for them, the British overestimated Loyalist support in the south and their presence persuaded some who had been sitting on the fence about the rebellion to join the Patriots.

The Battle of Monmouth was fought on June 28, 1778 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. General George Washington commanded the Continental Army which attacked the British Army commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton as the group was leaving the Monmouth Court House.Freehold Borough). It is known as the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse. Other leaders involved were Continental Major General Charles Lee and British Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis.
George Washington and his forces which included French soldiers had the British in a bad position on Yorktown. Washington and the French prevented the British from breaking through Washington's lines and the French navy prevented a British naval rescue of their comrades at Yorktown.
