Yes, they did. Education has always been important in the US. The Bible was used by many families as the primary tool for teaching the children and schools opened early in the colonies. The Boston Latin school was one of the early schools established in 1635. It was the first town supported school and established the local control over education. The first reading books were published at this time and so were books on writing/penmanship. Children were also taught math skills. It was felt that an educated population would preserve democracy.

Books were expensive and most school children used a 'horn book' for the first part of their schooling. It was a piece of wood with a thin sheet of cow horn, thin enough to be seen through, that protected a sheet of paper that was printed with the alphabet, numbers and usually several passages from the Bible.
