Estimating the total number of American casualties since 1776 is complex due to various conflicts, including wars, military actions, and domestic issues. Major conflicts such as the Civil War resulted in approximately 620,000 to 750,000 deaths, while World Wars I and II caused around 116,516 and 405,399 casualties, respectively. Additional conflicts like Vietnam, Korea, and more recent engagements in the Middle East have also contributed significantly to the total. Overall, the cumulative number of military casualties in U.S. history likely exceeds 1.3 million, not including civilian casualties from wars and other incidents.

We have engaged in several undeclared wars, such as the undeclared Naval War with France, under President Adams, and the War with the Barbary Pirates under Jefferson. Some of the conflicts, like Korea, were termed Police Actions, not wars. However, Congress did give approval for the use of US troops. Some Indian battles in the west were carried out without a formal declaration against that particular tribe or settlement. Every military action since the end of WWII have been undeclared wars. Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq..etc....
