The Mescalero Apache were located south of the Jicarillas in the Sacramento, Guadalupe and Davis Mountains of New Mexico and Texas. They made both temporary shelters of brushwood known as wickiups, mainly to provide shade from the hot sun and small Plains-style tipis for use by hunters when seeking buffalo herds in the eastern lowland areas of their range.
