The American Civil War is the conflict between the Union and the Confederacy. In the beginning the armies went in motion because of the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861. Soon it became a fight to preserve the Union while the Confederacy was fighting for Independence and the right to keep slavery in the south. Lee head of the Army of Northern Virginia and head of all confederate armies surrendered at Appomatox Court House in Virginia to General Grant head of the Army of the Potomic and commander of all Federal Forces.
