Depends on where it was minted and the condition of the coin. The type of half dollar minted during this time is a Benjamin Franklin Half dollar. It was also minted only in Philadelphia and Denver. These coins were struck in an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper. Their melt value is about 0.36 times the current price of silver.

If the coin only shows a small amount of wear it could be worth more to a collector. Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter just above the Liberty Bell. It may be blank or there may be a D.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 07/2012:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Almost no wear - $18.90

Uncirculated - $27.60 to $4580.00 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Almost no wear - $18.60

Uncirculated - $27.60 to $1560.00

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
