UpdatedThere were 2 major varieties of half dime struck in 1859. For the more common type which has the words United States of America on the back, you'll need to look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter. It may be blank or there may be an O.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 09/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $14

Moderately worn - $23

Slightly worn - $36

Almost no wear - $133

Uncirculated - $180 to $3,910 depending on quality

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn - $16

Moderately worn - $24

Slightly worn - $49

Almost no wear - $209

Uncirculated - $300 to $3,910

There was also a very rare "transitional" version made that year which happened when an 1859 front die was accidentally paired with a reverse die that was supposed to be held until the new 1860 coins were struck. These pieces don't carry the name of the country and can be worth over $40,000, but it's important to make sure any such coin is genuine.

DISCLAIMER: The values quoted are the best available, but may vary due to market fluctuations. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

AnswerPhiladelphia issues retail for $10 to $50 depending on condition. New Orleans issues retail for $15 to $110.
