I think the main one was mustard gas, a skin irritant which causes blindness. Phosgene was also used. It wasn't only used by the Germans.
There were many types of poison gas used in WW1 such as Chlorine, Diphosgene, Tearing Agent, or Blistering Agent. Blistering was one that smelled like mustard while being manufactured, which is why it is known as "mustard gas." It caused blisters that one could die from.

What was the significance of World War 1 and how it impacted America's future?

This is a very broad question, but I'll try to answer it. World War I was, as the name implies, one of the largest wars in world history, involving multiple countries. It utilized artillery and trench warfare more than previous wars. WWI also introduced chemical warfare in the form of mustard, chlorine, and phosgene gases. During this war, weapons such as mortars, machine guns, flamethrowers, tanks, and howitzers were used more extensively or for the first time. This war spawned the Treaty of Versaille. The Treaty of Versaille restricted Germany's military size, confiscated some of their territories, and forced them to pay reparations to other countries. These impositions outraged the citizens of Germany. This outrage helped Adolf Hitler achieve power because he promised Germany a brighter future. He violated the Treaty of Versaille by introducing military inscription. He violated the Treaty again and again, including invading Poland in 1939. This act forced Britain to declare war on Germany because they signed the Mutual Assistance Treaty with Poland. By the end of 1940, Australia, Britain, New Zealand, and Canada had declared war on Germany. Germany formed the Axis powers with Italy, Japan, and the Soviet Union. World War II had begun.
