Lewis and Clark's expedition, known as the Corps of Discovery, began in May 1804 at St. Louis, Missouri. They traveled up the Missouri River, reaching the Great Falls and then crossing the Rocky Mountains via the Lolo Pass. After navigating the Bitterroot Valley, they followed the Clearwater and Snake Rivers before reaching the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River in November 1805. The return journey commenced in March 1806, retracing part of their route before heading back to St. Louis by September of that year.
