The Civil War was one of the most important wars in American history. There were a few reasons to why the Civil War even began. The first and main reason to why the Civil War started was because of slavery. Slavery was heavily used in the South, because huge plantations were frequent and needed many laborers. So why not get slaves that work for free? It was the cheapest and most efficient solution. The North was the exact opposite. Slavery was not needed their for a couple of reasons, firstly the North had a huge population, plus they were more industrialized and didn't need as many workers that the huge plantations required.

So the North thought the South was doing a horrible thing and that a law should be made about stopping it. Whilst in the South, almost everybody there had slaves and couldn't do without them, or well, they didn't want to do without them. So this caused a lot of tension between the North and the South, and sparked the beginning of the Civil War.

The second reason to why the Civil War occurred, was because of Abraham Lincoln, yes, Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln lived in the North his entire life (besides moving to D.C.) and thought slavery was a horrible idea. Once he was a elected for president the South was furious. They feared he would end slavery, so many Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Lincoln started the Civil War because he feared the country would never be united unless the Union fought for it.

The Union (North) won the war on April 9, 1865. Fighting still continued until June 23, 1865, but Robert E. Lee had surrendered on April 9, 1865. So that is usually considered the end of the Civil War.

So to sum it all up the Civil War was for the rights of slavery and to "unite the country" as Abraham Lincoln had hoped.
