Civil War prisons were notorious for their overcrowding, inadequate shelter, and poor sanitation, leading to unsanitary conditions that fueled disease outbreaks. Food shortages resulted in malnutrition, with prisoners often receiving meager rations of spoiled or insufficiently nutritious food. Additionally, harsh treatment by guards and a lack of medical care exacerbated the suffering of inmates, making these facilities sites of extreme hardship and mortality.
