Most of the southern people were in dire need of food,clothing and shelter. Many homes had been destroyed, and crops were burnt. Many of the military aged men were either dead, or crippled. There were many widows, some had seen everything they owned put to the torch. Another problem was the means of transporting goods to the people that needed them. Most of the railroad lines were destroyed, and wagons could not move enough supplies to help the situation very much. The problem of people from the north installed as provincial governors only added fuel to the fire. There was much resentment from confederate veterans, and the newly freed slaves suffered as much as anyone. It would be several years before many of the states in the south would even be able to send representatives to congress. But gradually, things began to turn around, as the country on both sides began to realize that the best thing was a free and truly united nation, and the wounds began to mend. Soon the southern people reclaimed their position in the newly reunited land.
