The island of Great Britain came into being after being split from mainland Europe sometime between 180,000 and 450,000 years ago, with the flooding of the straits of Dover.

The Kingdom of Great Britain existed from 1707 to 1801, being replaced by the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the Act of Union 1800.
England has never become Great Britain.

Great Britain or Britain is an island in an archipelago situated to the northwest of Continental Europe. The country of England forms part of this island.

The Kingdom of Great Britain was the result of the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1707 and in 1801 this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland then seceded from the Union, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The countries of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland still exist as national entities.

The importance of England arose because England became a huge maritime power and then the Industrial Revolution started and flowered in England leading to the establishment of the British Empire (the first global superpower). As the capitol of that empire was situated in London, being English gets confused/merged with being British.

Actually an Englishman see himself first as British then English and a Scotsman/Welshman/Irishman would see them selves first as being Scots/Welsh/Irish, then British.

For such a small set of Islands it is all very complicated but we love it :-)

England became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707 when the kingdoms of England and Scotland were joined under the terms of the Union with Scotland Act and the Union with England Act passed by, respectively, the English and Scottish Parliaments in 1706 and 1707.
