That depends on how you define free, I suppose. I would say, yes, they were free, because no one owned them or could punish them at will. But they were still discriminated against based on their skin color... so they didn't necessarily have the same freedoms as other people, like being able to go to any college they chose, etc.
By that definition though, there are a lot of people that weren't (and probably still aren't) "as free" as other people, including women, Native Americans, etc. We're all free to live our lives and make our own choices, even when others don't like us or respect us, and even when we don't have the same opportunities as some others. So it just depends on how you define freedom.
There were no free African Americans in the south. In the north they were free but still discrimination kept them from expressing themselves and having rights.
Better then in the south
Free blacks were not helped by education reform.
Possibly due to the hostility towards the blacks that exsisted in the South and the laws which were created that still did not allow the black people to have the same rights as the White people. Yes, it was now illegal to own a black person as property actwe the war, but other laws were created whch ostrisized the blacks and made sure they were not allowed the sane rights as any whites. In the North these rules did not exsists and the blacks really were free, not just technically free as they were in the South.
Not just one thing, the tech in the north was better such as trains, gun power, the will of slaves maybe tasting freedom and blacks fighting for the free in the North!
"Blacks in the north", "Freedom at last", "Not your slave", "Life of a free black", "Free blacks among the whites", "Being a free black during a time of slavery".
well im not pretty sure how much in the 1861 but in 1860 there was 221,000 free blacks were in the north. hope that help :)

Some were conscripted [drafted ] and probably did not want to fight, some free Blacks from the North enlisted, and wanted to fight to free enslaved Blacks.
the blacks who gained their freedom in the north they founded schools and churches to advance their rights and communties.
they were happy to be slaves..they did not want to be free
Life for free blacks in the South was generally more restricted due to harsher racism, limited economic opportunities, and stricter laws governing their behavior. In contrast, free blacks in the North had more access to education, employment, and social services, although they still faced discrimination and prejudice. Overall, both regions presented challenges for free blacks, but the South tended to have more severe conditions.
