The answer depends on some clarification of the question.

What is the difference between a settlement and a colony

What is North America? Does it include islands.

Are you just asking about the US.

Here are some considerations from Wilkipedia.

St. Augustine is a city in the northeast section of Florida, United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States.

The continent (North America) is delimited on the southeast by most geographers at the Darién watershed along the Colombia-Panama border, placing all of Panama within North America. Islands generally associated with North America include Greenland, the world's largest island, and archipelagos and islands in the Caribbean.

An opinion: A settlement is short lived, a colony is long lived.

So now, depending on which criteria fit your needs, your possible answers are as follows.

1. 986 - 15th century (approx.) Greenland, an island associated with the North American continent. Is the duration of the occupation long enough to qualify as a colony. I would think so, but you decide.

2. 1002 or 1003 a settlement made by Leif Ericson probably in Newfoundland also an island but much closer to North America only lasted a season.

3. 1493 - Hispaniola, Bartalomeo Columbus arrived with 1300 men and founded a colony. Again it is on an island not the mainland but it has been occupied continuously since colonization.

4. 1519 - Mexico colonized by Hernan Cortes, continuously occupied

5. 1565 - St. Augustine is a city in the northeast section of Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States. However, St. Augustine is generally forgotten as a colony probably because histories of the US tend to be written by Anglo-Saxons. It is still older than the last colony...

6. 1607 - Jamestown VA founded by the English.

Colonists came over from England probably bringing the old English church practices. America was a very mixed religion area though. Most of the colonies had freedom of religion, many 'separatists' people who didn't follow English church; came to the colonies to have freedom over religion. This includes pilgrims who were puritans. This also includes Quakers. I think the colonies had alot of puritan churches, many of our founding fathers were puritan. Hope this answers your question. Please correct me if I a wrong about any of this.
