John Adams, who would later become the second President of the United States, assigned to Thomas Jefferson the task of writing the Declaration of Independence. This is why Jefferson is known as the "Father of the Declaration of Independence". George Washington, who led the American revolutionary forces and would later become the first president of the United States, is known as the "Father" of the United States. It should be noted that, in addition to being the primary author of the Constitution, Madison also was the primary author of the Federalist Papers. These documents explained the Constitution as it was being written. John Jay and Alexander Hamilton also contributed to the Federalist Papers.
