John Cabot
The first known explorer to land in the Americas was Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer from Iceland. He is believed to have reached the shores of what is now Newfoundland, Canada, around the year 1000 AD, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus's voyages. Erikson and his crew established a settlement called Vinland, which is thought to have been located near present-day L'Anse aux Meadows.
They wanted to claim land for themselves.
America comes from the name Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who was one of the first the believe the Americas were not India, but a new land entirely.
Italian navigator, John Cabot is believed to have been the first European to reach the North American mainland, in the year 1497. He is believed to have landed on the island of Newfoundland. Cabot sailed under the sponsorship of England.
