The first known explorer to land in the Americas was Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer from Iceland. He is believed to have reached the shores of what is now Newfoundland, Canada, around the year 1000 AD, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus's voyages. Erikson and his crew established a settlement called Vinland, which is thought to have been located near present-day L'Anse aux Meadows.
