In the colonial times much of the land in New England was cleared for farmland. Standard wood Fencing was becoming less of an option as trees were cleared and farmers plowing fields found a glut of rocks as they worked. Kill two birds with one one... Get the rocks out of the fields and replace wooden fences with ones that would never rot.
