The Soviet Union supported Vietnam because not only were they communist but they supported them because they were using the Vietnamese people to fight the United States. Which in other words it is called a proxy war.
The USSR was the primary major communist power. Red China was the secondary major communist power. Any country under those two, were often termed as satellite nations (subordinate to a higher authority); however in North Vietnam's case, Ho Chi Minh (their president) refused to allow his nation to be called a "satellite" to any nation; as he'd just spent over ten years ousting the French and Japanese and was now at war with the US! Therefore, he certainly wasn't going to add the Soviets or Communist Chinese to his future "enemy list." He'd take their aid (military equipment and training) and in return "he'd be a communist" and that's where the line was drawn.
The Vietnam War would solely be fought between the North Vietnamese (and their southern VC forces/all armed with Soviet/Chicom weapons) against the US and their allies...this security measure would prevent any future Soviet or Red Chinese take over after the US left (departed) South Vietnam.
The Soviet Union did not "Fight", that is enter combat, in the Vietnam war. They financed and armed North Vietnam but any Soviet combat forces in contact with South Vietnamese or American forces was incidental.
Chine supported North Vietnam not South Vietnam, and they supported the North as they accepted the Communist doctrine.
South China Sea: which is a part of the Pacific Ocean
The United States wanted to prevent communism from spreading.
Kennedy feared that Communists would take over South Vietnam.
China ruled Vietnam centuries ago (some sources say over 2,000 years ago), it's probable that Vietnam's agriculture may have been influenced by China.
They were concerned because at the time, China was communist so (obviously) they were supporting the north of Vietnam. China could have been worried as America had been such a big force in WWII.

The Vietnam War (1955-1975) was primarily fought between South Vietnam (ARVN) and the United States versus North Vietnam (NVA) and the Viet Cong. South Vietnam and the U.S. also had help from Australia, South Korea, and others, while the NVA and the Viet Cong had materiel support from the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China.
