They were a colony because they came and built New Amsterdam well before the English came to Plymouth. The English didn't want to control them, but wanted the location. New Amsterdam had a good natural port and good resources and THAT is what they were after from the Dutch.

The Dutch did not have a lot of people in it's colony so the British wanted to invade to have New York for it's own.
Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of the New Netherland colony, aimed to strengthen and expand the Dutch presence in North America. He sought to improve the colony's economy through trade, agriculture, and the establishment of a strong governance system. Stuyvesant also focused on fortifying defenses against rival colonial powers and promoting religious tolerance to attract diverse settlers, although he struggled with local dissent and conflicts with the English. Ultimately, his tenure was marked by efforts to maintain Dutch control until the English seized the colony in 1664.
The natural port is a main reason why they wanted it. Good land for farming was also another reason.
The transport 1,100 to 1,200 people to Barbados or Jamaica was the reason why England sent the Hercules and the America to Suriname in 1675. The English settled Suriname in 1650. But in 1674 the Dutch gained control of the colony. There were 120 English families living in Suriname at that time. Eighty of those families didn't want to remain there under Dutch control. So England sent the two ships to move those families elsewhere in the Caribbean.
The English did not want to compete with the Dutch in the colonies.

Because the Netherlands were very wealthy, there was not a lot of incentive for Dutch settlers to come to the New World. As a result, the inhabitants of the colony tended to be English. When the British decided to claim New Netherlands, The Duke of York launched a war flotilla to capture it. There simply weren't enough Dutch citizens who were willing to fight to defend the colony, so it was taken without any bloodshed.
