When Early Man found he was physically stronger than Early Woman. Also because, one out of three women died in childbirth and less than half of the children who born survived to have children of their own. So while early males went out and hunted for meat, early females stayed near their home to raise the kids and gather fruits and veggies to enhance their overall diet. This situation essentially lasted until the introduction of modern OB/GYN and the discovery of Birth Control, which freed women from the choice between abstinence or the risk of unwanted pregnancy, or even death. Also modern medicine so improved the chances of children surviving long enough to have their own kids that women didn't have to spend their entire young adulthood being pregnant or raising infants in order to see their bloodline survive.
